In his practice, Doherty allows the work to reveal itself, an habitual instinct of the hand dictating the direction of the work, guided by both apprehension and momentum. A constant and impetuous cerebral tic. Each piece begins without expectation. The model sits; sometimes a quite rational conclusion emerges, at other times a freeform ‘doodle’ takes hold and guides the pencil. All sense of reason departs. Failure and success meld into one.
